2023 was a hectic year for me. This was evident even without reviewing my Nextcloud calendar, which was brimming with appointments, events, and tasks.

You are sick if you can’t do exercise
#

My experience with illness is quite different from that of my friends, family, and colleagues. For instance, I suffered from a severe flu over the New Year, which left me bedridden and drained for three days. Now, nine days post-New Year, I am able to write this blog post, visit museums, and dine out with my girlfriend. Despite a lingering cough, I seem to be doing well. But am I truly healthy? In my view, health is synonymous with the ability to engage in competitive sports, which involves rigorous training. That means training for long distance runs like Marathon or Cross-runs with many meters of altitude.

The many illnesses have a big impact on my training. 1 week sick: 2-3 weeks no real exercise.

I really hope that this situation will be completely different in 2023++;

Marathon
#

I have planned sooo much. I only managed two marathons and these were without a PR (Personal Record) due to the lack of training.

  • ADAC Marathon Hannover 2023
  • 03:52h Place 808, Place AK 124

The positive thing is that I can run a time under 4 hours with almost no training.

Much more was possible. Unfortunately we had from KM 30 40-60 KM/h headwind. This is also reflected in the numbers:

  • 10km - 50:05
  • 21.1km - 1:46:14
  • 30 - 2:35:15
  • … and then the wind came.

My first Ultratrail Zugspitz Ultratrail 2023 - Leutash Trail I had to postpone this year for health reasons.

Open Source
#

From my perspective, this year was highly rewarding for Open Source, particularly in terms of my contributions. Followers on X are familiar with my work. A notable achievement was the successful porting of KDE Plasma to OpenBSD. Beyond that, I’ve submitted numerous pull requests to the KDE project, consistently focusing on enhancing UNIX/BSD compatibility. You can view all my work here: invent.kde.org/rsadowski. On GitHub, I’ve made a substantial impact with 637 contributions in 2023. It’s been a productive year, and I’m curious to see if I can maintain this momentum in 2024.

The move
#

After living in Böblingen/Stuttgart for a year and a half, we realized it was time for a change. In 2022, we explored options around Nürnberg and discovered a fantastic apartment right in the city. This relocation was a significant focus for us in the first quarter. Throughout 2023, both my partner and I invested considerable effort in adapting to our new life in Nuremberg and making it our home. Looking back, we feel confident that we made a great decision.
